An artist inspired by movements .

Rosy Campanita is a queer 2-Spirit artist and axolotl midwife, born to a Mexican immigrant family.  Rosy studied Fine Art at S.A.I.C (School of the Art Institute of Chicago) and left school in 2003 to start photo-documenting cultural life, land struggle, and resilience with a focus on Indigenous communities, immigration, and LGBTQ+ communities throughout the so-called “United States” and "Mexico".

The heart of Rosy's photography has been deeply inspired by the determination and persistence of Indigenous communities, and particularly the Indigenous communities of the southeast mountains of Chiapas, who gave birth to the Zapatista movement and land struggle in 1994 to demand autonomy over their lands and their lives, in response to the North American Free Trade Agreement that was passed on January 1, 1994.  Calling themselves E.Z.L.N. (Ejercito Zapatista de Libercion Nacional), this group has continued to inspire the artist’s work through their communiqués and their organizing work—living in autonomous communities as a means of challenging colonial systems of authority.
